The original club was formed on October 16th 1975 by employees of Bursgreen Engineering Company of Fence Houses, County Durham. Of the 8 founder members, only 2 have survived as current members of
Houghton & District Ramblers.
The membership grew over the years into a well supported & friendly club that was so successful the membership had to be limited.
In July 1993 Bursgreen Engineering Company ceased trading but the rambling club continued. Over the following years the name of the company was slowly forgotten and people could no longer associate the name "Bursgreen" with the company or area. As a result, the membership slowly reduced. At the AGM on December 10th 2004, it was proposed that the name be changed to Houghton and District Ramblers.
This was accepted and the membership is once again on the up.
The transport for our coach walks is provided by

Houghton and District Ramblers
is a friendly group and we welcome both new & visiting members to come along on any of our walks.
